Hedge Trimming in Derby

A well-cut hedge makes the whole garden look looked-after. I trim, shape and reduce hedges of every size across Derby, from a neat box hedge out front to a leylandii run that's got ideas above its station. All clippings taken away, every time.

Free, fixed quote: every hedge trimming job is priced individually, so there's no one-size-fits-all figure. You get one fixed price in writing before any work starts, and that's the price you pay.

Every Hedge, Cut Properly

Privet & Laurel

The classic Derby front-garden hedges. Cut tight and straight, two or three times a year keeps them dense and sharp.

Conifers & Leylandii

Topped, sided and reduced. Done carefully: cut too far into old wood and they won't grow back, so experience matters here.

Beech & Hornbeam

One proper cut a year, usually late summer, keeps the crisp shape and the winter copper leaves.

Box & Formal Shapes

Parterres, balls and low borders trimmed by hand for a sharp finish, not hacked with a strimmer.

Mixed & Native Hedges

Hawthorn, blackthorn and mixed boundaries cut at the right time of year so they stay thick and wildlife-friendly.

Overgrown Rescues

Inherited a jungle? Height and width reductions done in stages where the hedge needs it, with honest advice on what'll grow back.

How I Cut a Hedge

  1. 1

    Check for nests first

Between March and August I check every hedge for active bird nests before cutting; it's a legal requirement under the Wildlife & Countryside Act, and most gardeners never mention it. If there's a nest, that section waits.

  2. 2

    Cut with sharp, professional trimmers

Sharp blades make a clean cut that heals fast; blunt ones tear the growth and leave it brown. Sides cut with a slight taper so the base gets light and doesn't go thin.

  3. 3

    Level by line and eye

Long runs get a taut string line so the top's dead level: no wavy tops that look worse than before.

  4. 4

    Everything cleared and taken away

Clippings bagged as I go, paths and lawn blown clean, waste taken with me. You get a tidy garden, not a tidy hedge next to a mountain of green waste.

Set and Forget: Regular Hedge Visits

The cheapest way to keep hedges looking sharp is little and often. Book me in for two or three visits a year and I'll just turn up on schedule: no phoning around, no overgrown hedge, no thinking about it.

And if the lawn or the weeds need doing while I'm there, it's all the same visit. That's the point of booking someone who does both.

Questions About Hedge Trimming

When's the best time to cut hedges?

Most hedges do best with their main cut between late spring and early autumn. Formal hedges like privet and box may want two or three trims a year to stay sharp. I always check for active nests before cutting; it's the law, and it's just doing the job properly.

Do you take the clippings away?

Every last one. Clippings are bagged, loaded and taken away as part of the price. You won't find a pile left by your gate or stuffed in your brown bin.

Can you reduce a hedge that's got too tall?

Yes, height reductions are common, especially conifers and leylandii that have run away over the years. One thing to know: leylandii won't regrow from old brown wood, so I'll always tell you honestly how hard it can be cut before it looks bare.

Do you do regular visits?

Yes, plenty of customers have me in two or three times a year to keep hedges sharp without thinking about it. Regular visits cost less than big one-off rescues.
